NEW! Come try the game Pétanque!
Originating in the south of France along the Mediterranean coast, Pétanque is a game similar to bocce, but where the balls, called boules, are thrown instead of rolled and it is played on a smaller court with teams of 1-3 people.
Players start by placing a 20” plastic circle on the ground and throwing a smaller ball, called a cochonnet or coche, 20’-33’ feet away from the circle. Then, each team takes turns standing in the circle and throwing their boules to try to get closest to the coche or to knock the other team’s boules away. At the end of each round, the score is determined by which team is closest to the coche and how many of their boules are closer than the other team’s closest one. The first team to reach 13 points wins the game.
Traditionally, the game is played outdoors with metal boules on dirt or gravel, but with the invention of soft rubber boules with the same size and weight of outdoor boules, the game can now be played indoors on any surface, including wooden basketball courts like the one at the Saco Community Center.
Pétanque has been growing in popularity around the world and in the US, where there are now hundreds of clubs, including at least three in Maine including the Saco Bay Pétanque Club.
